It's just what I do to cool it down afterwards, and I didn't wonder if it was bad or not until I was using someone elses frying pan.

i do it...basically to soak the pan before it becomes concrete, it hasn't effected my pans yet but don't do it with a glass dish it will explode if cold hit it.

Yes it is a bad habit to get into. first of all you could get scalded if there is any hot grease still in the pan, and you splash cold water onto it. 2ND it's not a good idea to put grease down the drain, and 3RD you could warp the fry pan. best to let it cool down for a few minutes and the wipe it out with a paper towel before washing it.

Cold water in a hot pan will cause it to warp. There isn't an easy way to straighten that out, and you really want a flat surface on any cookware to distribute the heat evenly.

Well, it really depends on what type of pan you are using. If it is cast-iron it isn't good for the pan but it is ok to cool it down every now and then but if it is nonstick or those other kinds it can be very bed for them!

Never add water to hot oil. It's a burn bomb.
You can add water to a dry hot pan just watch out for steam.

Well if its really cold water I think it's bad but you could probably cool it off with normal temperatured water.

if you col a non stick pan with water while its hot it will remove the non stick coating and ruin it

yes it is bad, you can warp the pan which may ruin it.
