I tend to sit in the backdrop and watch things and I have noticed that the usage of Sir and Ma'am has all but disapeared. What ever happened to opening the door for a lady. ladies whatever happend to knowing when to hold you tounge unstead of giving a whole drama story and domianting the whole conversation. I also have seen people who think it is ok to cuss at a woman or a family member it is most deffinantly not ok to do so. No if they do it first it isnt right but come on take the high road..you never know who you will run into again or who else is watching. Sir and Ma'am should be used anytime adressing anyone older than you or anyone the same age respect should be given to younger people as well because they are the future lead by example.

It seems that courtesy is a forgotten art. People don't care about much, but their own satisfaction. Caring for others is too much of an inconvenience and a waste of time it seems.

I try to be corteous, and it does work, usually. At least the people around me are happy to see me, because I try to curb the negativity.

However...I do have some family members that like to goof around with me. We may curse each other, and pick on each other, but we know that it's all in jest and fun. But we are sure to make it known that it is play time when we do it.

Well, ma'am, it depends. We say "ma'am" and "sir" a lot here in North Carolina. Doesn't make us any more polite than anyone else, but it sort of greases the social wheel, so to speak.

Manners in general have taken a dive. There is absolutely no reason in the world to keep cellphones on in doctors' offices, theaters, restaurants, job interviews, etc. but people do. And have you had the dubious pleasure yet of having someone answer one of your questions in YA with foul language? Emily Post, where have you gone?

I was raised in the south and was taught to address adults as "sir" and "ma'am." It was expected. Then I moved to the East Coast and people laughed at me when I said "sir" and "ma'am." I still say it -- it's a reflex.

Yes, we should Sir and Ma'am. And we should not call each other by our first names in front of kids. Refer to each other as Mrs. Smith or Mr. Jones.

A lot of common courtesy has been lost over the decades. It is a real shame but for the few of us who still practice good manners, hopefully it will rub off on others.

Good manners are a turn on to most women.Bosses love them.Grandparents go crazy over them. And parents feel so proud of the job they have done.
The Military demands them.<><

I was taught good manners at an early age and they were enforced at all times. Soon it just came naturally. The more respectful you are, the more respect you will get in return.
