hmmm... looks like just about every other Jackson Pollock, apart from the colour... oh well, I'd say that the colours used are perhaps not the bright "thanksgiving" colours we often think of to describe autumn, but more indicative of the dead leaves, leafless branches and light dusting of snow that signals the oncoming of winter.

The word "Rhythm" aptly describes just about all of Pollock's work in this style - you can easily lose yourself in them, literally tracking his pattern of movement throughout the painting.

I've heard this description of his work - "Pollock was very aware of his edges." He rarely leads your eye off the canvas, he was a master at containing the viewer's gaze within the image.

That's about the nicest thing I can say about his work ;-)

I would tend to think that it has to do with his color choice. The rhythem part is the obvious line quality of the painting. He would often listen to jazz, and just kind of dance over the canvas while flicking paint with brishes, sticks and even glass. You can even see his cigarette butts in somew of his work.

There is no better definition of "modern" painting,. As by definition, "modern" entails that:

1) there is no representation of an object. Modernists believed that representation is a lie, or illusion. This is what would make me tend to think the "autumn" part was only his color choice.

2) it emphasizes the media used. In other words, it uses paint in only a way paint can be used. You can't splatter pencil lead, or marble.

Hope this helps!
