On the whole, I try to vary the explanations based on the patient's demographics, using appropriate analogies from whatever their field of employment might be, or what their area of knowledge is. Of course, that would also vary by the specific procedure in question is, too, don't you think?

Having had to lead real people to an understanding of what is going on in the things I or others are proposing to do, I have also found that drawn diagrams are often quite helpful; as artists go, it's a good thing I don't feed my family by my art, but it usually gets the idea across.

On the whole, I think that explanations in medicine are rather like shoes: they must be chosen to fit the individual for whom they are provided. This is a non-trivial art, one that is usually only learned with a lot of experience.

Well i recently had back surgery and my doctor said he had new toys lol. he explained that this new modern technologie is much safer and faster. They also help to not leave big scars. so i would explain how much better they are than the previous technologies used on patients.
