I have a Sony Handycam DCR-HC36. It shoots to MiniDV tapes and i love it. The only problem is the program it came with to transfer video to my pc maxes out at a small resolution (think standard web video clip size). My friend has the same camera and makes amazing videos that have full screen resolution (clear picture, not blown up), He uses a Mac and I'm not sure which program but there definitely has to be a program for my PC that will let me get my footage off my cam without losing any quality. Anyone know of any programs (preferably cheap but anything helps!)?

The problem might be with your transfer settings. When you transfer, use firewire, and make sure it is transferring in the DV-AVI (or simply .AVI) format and if there is a size setting, make sure it says 720x480. Also, make sure that it takes up 1GB for every 5 minutes (don't sweat; you'll be able to delete these files after you're done editing). And finally, is your friend using an HD cam? If he has an HD cam, then his resolution WOULD look better than an SD cam. But that doesn't mean you can 't get better pictures. Yes, I know that sounds contradictory, but go ponder about that for a minute. I hope this helps!

You need a Fire Wire cable to the PC (FireWire input or card required) and Windows Movie Maker or Studio Deluxe or Premier to capture and edit.

Use this free video capture utility from Stoik http://www.stoik.com/products/morphman/Stoik_capturer.htm to capture video to your hard disk. Select standard AVI without compression when capturing if you want high quality video.
