Godzilla does not win in the japanese version. The only difference with the japanese version is that when King Kong is seen swimming off at the end you hear Godzillas roar. Whoever says that Godzilla wins at the end of the Japanese version has never seen it.
I think due to the fact that Godzilla is seen as more of a threat to Japan as a villian that King Kong is the hero of the movie by default. That is why they have him win at the end IN BOTH VERSIONS. I am a huge Godzilla fan and was initially sad to see him lose in the end. However he puts on a valiant effort and you can never keep him down. He will keep coming back and coming back.
If Godzilla was fighting the original King Kong he would have squashed him like a bug.

Nonsense. King Kong is to Godzilla as Smeagol is to Deagol...
Oh no, I'm mixing movies...
perhaps I should mix another drink instead.

Godzilla wouldn't even have to get that close. His fire-breath would roast Kong before the giant ape could get close enough to hurt him.

Blasphemy is the original victimless crime.
And since there's no actual victim, then the "crime" is really a matter of opinion. That is, if the right fictional monster wins the battle, then there's no crime -- but if the wrong fictional monster wins, then there's good box office, which is a crime of a different order.
Thus ends my foray into film criticism. Thank you and good night.
