male birds mount the female and they rub vents together, the female pulls her tail feathers sideways allowing the male to find the spot. Finches are very prolific, meaning they love to breed, so be careful not to give them a nest if you don't them to breed. please get more info before you attempt a breeding pair

You just got your birds, DON'T LET THEM BREED!!! DO NOT PLACE A NEST IN THE CAGE, THIS ONLY ENCOURAGES BREEDING!

Chances are, your birds are related. If you let them breed, you can have chicks with lots of problems.

Also, you need to make sure if you are going to breed that the birds are on a good breeding diet for at least six months, you need to do your research on breeding, and know how to take care of the chicks if they abandon them.

New birds are also usually very young. No bird should be encouraged to breed unless they are 2-3 years old or older. Breeding any younger can cause problems in the hen and chick abandonment.

You will also need to know where the chicks will go once they are old enough to leave, this means homes.

Please, go out and purchase a book on how to take care of the birds you have before you even think about breeding.

Internally: the birds mate, then the shell forms around the egg inside the female. BTW, many birds lose most of their sexual characteristics when it's not mating season, so as to keep weight to a minimum. Flying is hard work; no use in carrying around extra hardware.
