Congrats and be proud of yourself for being an involved parent! Here are three tips to guide you through the name-selection process:
NUMBER ONE: When I was pregnant with my first child, I read that other people give more respect to people (especially in business situations) whose name fits this model:
The FIRST letter of the LAST syllable of the FIRST name should be the same letter as the FIRST letter of the LAST name!
Here is an example: If your last name is Smith, your child should be given a first name that has its last syllable beginning with an "S" sound. So for a girl, it could be Melissa or Nancy, and for a boy, it could be Webster or Carson. It is kind of complicated to figure out, but it does give you an idea of where to start with so many choices out there.
NUMBER TWO: try to avoid names that are being over-used these days. This year, the top 10 boy names (in order from #1 to #10) are Jacob, Michael, Joshua, Matthew, Ethan, Andrew, Daniel, Anthony, Christopher, and Joseph. For girls, the most popular names are Emily, Emma, Madison, Abigail, Olivia, Isabella, Hannah, Samantha, Ava, and Ashley. Of course, these may vary by region (for example, in my state and in the South in general, people LOVE double names for girls, like Mary Elizabeth or Anna Grace).
NUMBER THREE: Be careful to consider possible nicknames and also words that may be spelled by initials - - my sister's last name starts with a "B" and she named her son Samuel Osborn . . .
