Is society a collective excuse for the horrors of humanity? If the Bible means nothing to you take it in the literary sense: The greatest story ever told.

No.
It is a way to transcend the horrors that humanity has created out of our once beautiful world.
The Bible doesn't whitewash the horrors. It exposes them from Cain to Judas in all their ugliness. Blood for blood, Jesus died to end bloodshed. Accept Him or don't, the choice is yours.

I spent a lot of my lifetime against GOD and his people. I am now reading these answers and they amaze me. It's like you come to this little slice of cyber space and start having fun making the Christians mad and before you know it you are displaying real hate toward something you don't even believe in. It concerns me a little bit.

Christianity can be an excuse. Afterall, in the Bible, God commits all of his sins many times. If God does it, it's alright, apparently. Just say God told you to and people will think you're forgiven.
