Always wash lettuce... it's on the top twenty list of foods most contaminated with pesticides. The best way is to fill a sink with water, put the lettuce in and let the dirt fall to the bottom. Organic is the best bet because its not harmful to people or the environment.

Yes! You should wash all veggies. You say you tasted chemicals? Well, it was probably a pesticide. I hope you were intelligent enough not to keep eating the lettuce since it tasted of chemicals.

wash all of your vegetables. Especially the leafy greens. It removes pesticides and some of the intensely strong earthy flavors.
Rinse the lettuce then fill the sink with water. Soak for about a minute and spin or pat dry.

It sounds like it was dipped into antioxidants to keep the lettuce from browning before you bought it.
It makes lettuce smell bad. You could rinse it, but if there was a lot it would probably still stink.
They used to use that at a restaurant I once worked at. Nasty stuff!

the more i read about produce, the more i want to HAVE to wash it... i found a grasshopper in my bag of prewashed and cut lettuce... . im a mushroom lover... now how dirty are they??? you HAVE to wash all produce!!! pre packaged or not... the people stocking the produce(lets say tomatos , that are sold loose... or fruit, like grapes) how many hands are on those???
how about the shopping cart you use??? and then you drive home(steering wheel/door handle) then you go home (refridgerator ) and then you go wash the vegetables or fruit??(kitchen sink and faucet handles)... so the food is clean, but what have you contaminated trying to do the right thing????

Ya you should always rinse all vegatables and they also have a veggie wash just for produce.the one real concern is e-coli
after the spinich outbreak I wash stuff all the more.for lettuce and leafy greens a salad spinner comes in really handy.

yes you should wash it. people touched it with there hands that touched money and sneezed one and wipe there anus when they are in the bathroom. and the lettuce has sand/dirt on the leaves because the store dont clean it. but when you are washing your vegetable use COLD water. because the hot/warm water will 'cook' it

Yes, you should wash lettuce, that was the reason you tasted what tasted. It was a chemical pesticide that you tasted. And pesticides aren't really good to eat. So please wash your veggies and fruits every time you eat them.

Yes! I never used to either, until I saw how the lettuce is picked and transported - oftentimes touching machinery and equipment which has fecal contamination. Ewww!!!
