I have a 2000 Mustang. Sometimes at a stop light, the rpm goes way down like its about to die, then comes back up, sometimes too high. I removed the piece (intake valve???) the thing with the electrical wires connected to it, and cleaned it out with carburetor cleaner, put it back on, and also replaced the air filter (which was MUCH in need of change). I still have the problem. Not quite as bad, but still there nonetheless. I notice there is a little hex screw on the end of the valve. should i turn it ? Keep in mind I know next to nothing about cars, and I only knew to clean that from reading a forum. Do i need to buy a new one??
Thanks!!

DO NOT under any curcumstances turn that hex screw, that unit is preset at the factory and can not be changed setting wise. Sounds to me like you need a new fuel filter, especially if it is the OEM original filter. try changing that first.

The piece you talked about is the idle speed motor and cleaning it, helps only in very limited settings.. usually when it's starting to have problems.. but I find the carb cleaner also causes them to make noise after...
First you need to go somewheres and have the fuel filter changed and the next thing would be to clean the throttle body.. Best is the industrial cleanings that are done at the quick lube places that clean the whole intake.....
As your vehicle is both starving probably for fuel and air, but my guess is the air that normally passes the throttle plates...

Sounds like maybe you cleaned the MAF sensor? Check the IAC, idle air control valve. They are know to fail on the mustangs and cause poor idle issues. Cleaning it may solve the problem. If you've already cleaned the IAC, check for a vacuum leak, this could also cause a poor idle. Don't turn the screw on the throttle body, that's the idle screw. You can also browse this site for information, search for poor idle or iac valve.

Stangnet is a very good resource for mustang info!

The gas is undesirable. Drain all of it out. also, its an old ford, and so at the same time as that's chilly, it has problem staying operating. once the motor is warmed up, that's going to idle a touch more beneficial than it may at the same time as it replaced into chilly. yet your significant issue is the old gas. gas looses its octane score over the years, and over a year's time, the gas may have lengthy gone undesirable, and began to split, and leave a varnish contained in the carburetor. Rebuilding the carb may help to some volume, in spite of the undeniable fact that the old gas is the most urgent problem. On a aspect note, is the motorcar a coupe or fastback? (If its a fastback, carry onto it! they are not straightforward to discover in sturdy situation)

I definately would change the fuel filter I would also check your throttle position sensor also sounds like you need a motor vac and a throttle body cleaning badly I own a stang and that always helps my idle issues. make sure your maf does Not have any dirt etc also you should'nt use carb spray way 2 harsh they have electrical contact cleaner for those use it very sparingly. hope you did'nt bend the wires, the maf is very important it needs to be clean and damage free.gl2u brotha.

It's most likely the M.A.P. sensor. I doubt it is a bad Idle Air Control Vavle because it will usually stall when at idle. Not go up and down when brought to an idle.

Replace the IAC. Cleaning them doesn't always fix them if the electric motor is going out.
