I'm not sure you can have a final step of a cycle, but soil bacteria:

1. fix nitrogen from the air into a compound that plants can use
2. cause denitrification when they change nitrogen compounds into atmospheric nitrogen again
3. decompose wastes and dead organic matter to return the nitrogen compounds to the ground.
