It's also in where they place their horse, especially at the final turn and into the homestretch, as that can also affect how well the horse finish. Sometimes, a jockey will make the horse save ground by riding the rail and maybe get a good finish is that horse is good enough in the end. Other times, if he/she has alot of horse going into the stretch, and that jockey can get that horse into a winning position, then all the jockey has to do is put that horse in a clear running space and put the horse into a full drive.

This is also true among harness racing drivers.

According to alot of the experts out there they control the industry, since they don't get paid enough, they bet on the horses and throw every race instead. I somehow get lucky and seem to have the jock throwing the race over 35% of the time. For those who beleive that it is possible that jockey's make mistakes just like every other athlete and human out there, they do have some control on where the horse is placed during the race. Most of the time a horses running style and post position force a jockey to make a move to gain position early on in the race, amazingly enough sometimes a trainer tells them to take back and save ground in the paddock. If the jock has been on the horse many times before the trainer will often say, "you know what to do" and let the jock ride the race as it unfolds knowing the horses' style. If he is unfamiliar with the mount the trainer will sometimes tell him to get into the horse on the turn if he looses ground, or don't use him until you know you are about to be engaged. So in a way they do have control on the outcome, but if they stray from instructions they won't be on that horse again, so I would say the trainer has more control, even though they are watching from the stands. It's the same as if you were playing baseball and didn't bunt when you were given the sign, most likely you wouldn't be back up there again when it counted.

Yes! They can pace the horse or let it run free out and get in the lead and they have control of the whip, I mean if they didn't have a whip then the horse probably wouldn't know what it's doing! lol

Of course! They can hold their horse back if they want, and they have to do everything right if they want to be in contention to win.
