A great place to start is excercise. Start with some Yoga or Pilates to help reduce some of that stress.
Check your local TV listing and join in on a workout. Usually in the am. Or if you have on demand..under the fitness section are a lot of great workouts to follow along with. Also ther is the DVD/video option. kathy Smith is great for Beginner to Advanced. Recently I started a little Booty ballet..LOVE IT. Nothin' crazy but a great fun total body workout.
Stress causes overeating so I would definately work on getting the stress under control, and then curb the eating habits. Eat at the same time every day..drink lots of ice cold water. The ice cold part burns up to 200 extra calories a day. green Tea will flush away a few pounds.
Set a goal date and remind yourself that though you may not eat that ice cream today..once you hit that date..you can have 2 scoops.
GOOD LUCK

Well, eating a healthy diet and getting adequate exercise are both important, but even more important is your mental outlook. Being stressed out will make everything more difficult. I also know that visualization helps a lot in losing weight (of course, it is no substitute for eating/exercising well).

I recommend you read James Redfield's books:

The Celestine Prophecy
The Tenth Insight
The Secret of Shambhala

These are written as an adventure series, so they are easy/fun reads, but contain a lot of useful information on leading a better/healthier life. Each is around 200 pages.

Eat healthily and exercise regularly. What's so confusing about that?
If you don't know what a healthy diet is, read up a bit, or see a nutritionist. basically, lost of fresh vegetables, whole grains, and balanced proteins and dairy.
If you don't know how to exercise, read up on that! You can always start off with jogging or playing other sports, if you don't want to go to the gym. If you join a gym, there should be trainers who can help you get started.

The most important thing is to change you eating and drinking habits. Watch for hidden calories. Not only in food, but in drinks too.
When you cook, try to use as less fat as possible.
It is not easy and it will take some time.
Do some physical exercises. Walk as much as you can. Use not always the elevator.
Good luck!!!
