I'm not into this whole age thing and I'm 50 but I know lots of seniors who would rather die than let someone know how old they are. When I know they feel that way I ask them why and their answer is almost always the same....When people think you're old...they think you're either invisible or stupid so why let them have the satisfaction.

Yes, many people, especially women, don't like to be reminded of their age, they may feel old or they may feel that others will judge them as old.
Personally I think everyone should be allowed to ask just about anything -once. Because curiosity is a normal human trait, and there are also lots of people who don't mind telling such things at all, it seems a bit strict to never be allowed to ask at all. However if the other person seems reluctant to answer or even says so straight out, DON'T EVER push! That is rude! Ask once, no answer, forget about it. :-)

Well, I think for some people, they may feel that it is none of anyones business how old they are. I believe they may be feeling that way if they are getting older, or if, for example, they are supposedly considered "too young" for a job they are applying for, and they don't want that to be a factor. Stuff like that.

I believe it is because they probably feel you will judge them based upon their age and some people actually act much younger than they really are. Or they don't like people telling them they act too old for their age.

Some people are sensitive about their age. But I think it's not their age really, it's that they can't accept themselves as they are.
I mean, to just straight out ask someone would depend on the context of the rest of the conversation. But better err on the side of caution. If someone asks you, just ask them right back. If they asked you and meant it in an insulting manner, then ask them their age and then say "Oh, really? I thought you're much older." [Note, this works only for people over 25 or so...]
There's this saying that "a Lady doesn't talk about her age and her weight." This is total nonsense. Well, it only makes sense if these are the only two things that would make a woman a bit mysterious....

No it's viewed as invasion of privacy. If you really want to know a person's age then there are other less invasive ways to find out.
