You're looking at bunk beds, communal facilities (Although some offer private rooms and facilities at a premium), great opportunity to meet people from all walks of life and extra $$$ to splurge on the things that you really want to do. Tripadvisor.com is also a great site to get the "real dirt" on Hostels. And I totally agree with "just me" - A Hostelling International establishment is a safe bet and often close to where you want to be in a city - You should check out the HI hostel in Ottawa - it's a former jail - real fun :)

You share a room with several other people (3-7 others usually). Shared bathrooms, shared kitchen facilities. Most are fairly clean, especially if you stick with big name ones like Hostelling International. A great way to budget and meet people while travelling.

I agree with "just me". They can be a little off the beaten path, but still close to attractions. At some you can get a "private" room where you can be alone for a few extra bucks. My wife and i like this option, and we like chatting with the other interesting folks who make their way to hostels instead of hotels.

Check on he web. They are "overnight" Hosterias, for youth, and occacionaly some adults. Most of them students or people with sense of adventure, discovery, trill and making friends along the way. To register you need valid passport of any country, approved by the host country. The rates are approximately a halve of the cheapest motels. Please request their Hostel international directory.
