Traditional English deserts were hot steamed puddings, like Spotted Dick, and Plum Duff. Bread was also used with marmalade (Tudor) as in a bread and butter pudding, or cold pressed with fruit like a summer pudding. However most of these like the, lighter sponge cakes were introduced with sugar in the Tudor period. That's when Walnut, Ginger cake, and all the other spiced cakes entered the menu
The best example of a ancient desert must be the Tart - Bakewell Tart, but that is an open pasty pie... English cakes in the medieval period were simple scones, muffins and Pound cakes, which due to the honey, were a lot heavier than their modern varieties.

Don't think there is one really. There tends to be lots of regional cakes though. But the following come to mind,
Welsh Cakes
Eccles Cakes
Steamed puddings (or are these Amercian)
Spotted Dick
Bread and Butter Pudding
I think Bread and Butter pudding is probably the most English, who else would make a cake from stale bread, butter and milk!!!!!

A Victoria sponge is a typical English cake I suppose!
But you could also include parkin (a ginger cake from Yorkshire) or treacle sponge.
