As a breeder of Goldens I was always very resposible to not only my dogs but to my pups and the my clients. I had all the testing done to make sure the dogs I had were right for breeding. I kept careful records to ensure each breeding was right not only for me but for my dogs. I chose the people who I sold my pups to. Not everyone who wanted one of my pups got one. I was very picky as to who got one of my pups. I was not considered a big breeder but I was considered a good one not only by my piers but by the people who got one of my pups. There is no money to be made in breeding, if that was true I'd be rich by now. So I did it because I love this breed and wanted only the best I could produce to enhance the breed. Money never came into the picture because there wasn't much left after the vet bills and the feed buills and housing of the dogs the everyday care of the dogs. Not to mention the grooming and most importantly the love you must have for the breed you choose.
I would say that 90% of my pups were for pets, other went on to be service dogs of one sort or another some went on to be very good hunting dogs. But even show dogs are someones pets too.
I think the main word here is responsible!

I think where we got our dog from would be a responsible breeder. They had the male and female, allowed her to only have one litter of pups a year, and when we went to look at them, it was like going through a job interview. They asked us very serious questions, and told us they turn down people more than they accept them as giving the puppy a good home. They also sold their puppies a little cheaper which made the big breeders/puppy mills upset!
It's just so sad going to an animal shelter and seeing all those good dogs without a home. That is why some people disagree with breeding a dog.
Good question.

Very few people raise their dogs inside their home period. They have other places to house them other than the home.Call it what you will ,they do most responsible Breeders have climate controlled dog kennels or houses whatever, some have all the conveniences of their home,TV,Bathrooms .Showers,Tubs,Heat ,Air,Radio,Ventilation Systems,Septic Tanks,Play Yards and on and on.Even Washers and Dryers and a stainless steel Medical Room with a Refrigerator and a place for Quarantining sick pups. There are a lot of people who have nothing but dog houses and chains ,that raise puppies on the Ground and in a Dog house in the back yard. Then their are people who have pins ,like rabbit cages up off the ground and believe that is safe???No heat or air or anything???Maybe they bring moms and puppies inside once pups are born???Who knows ???Which do you consider to be Backyard Breeder Someone that has puppies contiguously and a big variety of different kinds of Dogs are no better than a puppy mill. You cannot be expert in all types and do your best. Most people who are so dead set against Breeding have worked in shelters and seen bad things happen to good dogs and I'm sure that would make anyone sick of seeing good dogs being put down or mistreated. Then some people like to just run down anyone who is not in their "Click"Don't listen to the negative listen to your heart and your Vet,Good Luck Read up on your pet and know what, when and where your babies can be best cared for.Raising and caring for pups is very ,very time consuming and sometimes heartbreaking. It is a 24/7 job.It is not something you do and just sit by and watch the time go by.Good Luck!!! It costs a lot of money as well.

Alot of people get into breeding because they think it is a quick and easy way to make a buck. They do absolutely no reseach and usually have no money for medical bills when things go wrong. Then, they blame the hospital for not being able to give them free services for THEIR ignorance and neglect. Their dogs are very often uncared for. They live in horrible enviornments. Their only purpose for those people are to be money makers, but no money is put into them.
It is these "back yard breeders" that give good responsible breeders bad reps. Unfortunately, these back yard breeders out number the good ones.
Another reason doesn't really have anything to do with breeding itself. It is just that there is an overpopulation of dogs and cats in this country. There are so many dogs at shelters in need of homes as it is.
To all you good responsible breeders out there, is post is not in reference to you. I have seen alot of very responsible breeders out there who have done research on gestation, whelping, and raising puppies. They have made a hard effort to learn and know that they are doing. They are willing and able to put in the money to keep their dogs healthy and make every effort to carry only the good traits of the breed.

It is not an easy job breeding th Firstly the male and female have to be together for several days until the two dogs mate. Then the weeks of watching them if the female is in a mother way. But let me just say, it is an awful lot of work, and some people dont have trhe time for breeding. Check with a vet if you are planning to mate your dog. good luck bettyk

the way I got into breeding chihuahuas is because we take in abused and neglected animals we breed the females every two years and they only have two litters a piece we do this to get the money to have the ones we take in spayed or neutered and then we find them homes I also tell every person that buys a puppy I reserve the right to reposes this pup should I find that they are not being properly taken care of and have done so. I have seen 47 puppies put to sleep in one day alone because they could not be placed I quit the humane society and do what I can on a limited budget

Pple don't have a problem with responsible breeding. We have a problem with irresponsible morons who are just looking to either make "cute puppies" or a quick buck.
Most of these pple who have to come on yahoo and ask what age is proper to stud a dog out, know nothing about breeding. They don't know about health testing, temperment testing, brucellosis, OFA, whelping, weaning, heart worm preventative, worming. NOTHING. Plus they are just breeding to breed. Why breed sub standard dogs? Dogs who are not titled or even close to their breed standard.
People get mad because all these breeders are doing is contributing to pet over poplulation, more irresponsible breeding and innocent dogs being put to death, because there is simply no room for them.

All our dogs are from rescue. The responsible breeder also has to be someone who is diligent in finding good homes for the dogs, and to track the dogs through their whole lives. What many people do to abuse dogs is truly terrible.

if you think there wouldn't be any dogs left, then you are totally out of touch with the real world.
Go to a shelter, and then tell me how many of those dogs you think were intentianally bred. I mean, ON PURPOSE. You think there's a shortage of dogs? And think there ever will be? NOT A CHANCE IN HELL!!
You have a lot to learn. How about you get a job, or just volunteer at a shelter for 1 month. Then get back on here and tell me how you feel.
