The are called myoclonic jerks. You can get a type of seizure called myoclonic seizures but myoclonic jerks are not epileptic in origin, they are a normal 'release' phenomena.

I'm sure most people have experienced these, I have dreamt I'm about to fall over and I wake up with this sudden 'jump'.

OK listen it's not a ghost and this is 100% normal. It's called sleep paralysis. You are consious but can not move your physical body. It happens every time you sleep but you usually aren't consious then. Look up astral projection and sleep paralysis online you'll find some usefull information. Sleep paralysis is what the body does to prevent you from falling out of bed when you are dreaming.

Actually, you may be experiencing a myoclonic jerk. If you experience these sensation after just falling asleep, that's most likely what it is. When our bodies begin to fall asleep, our muscles, organs, and blood flow slow down. This is usually the time when we "dream" about falling down because we have the sensation of falling. Our heart sends a strong pulse throughout our body because it reads the slowing of the organs as a sign of dying. This myoclonic jerk is the heart's way of trying to restart the body's system. So when you dream that you fall and then experience that falling sensation, this is most likely the explianation.

Yes, I thought I was the only one. Quite often I wake up feeling as if I am falling onto the bed. It's happened pretty much for my whole life. When I was a child I was convinced that I could levitate.

I have no idea what it's called.

I don't know what the condition is called, but I have it too !
I don't feel like I'm falling over, I just feel like I've just been jolted of my bed , sometimes it feels like its from pretty high up !
I hate that feeling ! Kind of scary isn't it !

Good Luck !
