Is it a hazard to throw them away?

Hi JustMe,

VERY good question!

Batteries of all types (alkaline, car, phone, rechargeable, etc.) contain heavy metals or acids, which are hazardous wastes by law.

The Environmental Protection Agency has realized that most individuals are discarding hazardous wastes from their households in regular trash, which goes to landfills.

Check your State's EPA website for "Household Hazardous Waste." You can take chemicals, drugs, pesticides, aerosol cans, etc. to the sites for free.

If you just have the one battery, please take it to Circuit City.

yup. they don't degrade biologically, naturally. Basically if u just throw them they'll mess up the land on which they are and can release toxic products. They mess up planet earth quite a bit...

so recycle them, and all types of batteries.
