Take a look at the way marriage was created: one man, one woman - Adam and Eve.

"For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh."
- Genesis 2:24

Monogomy was the rule and nobody married two wives until Lamech was born - he was the first polygamist. He was an evil man and also a great murderer (4:23).
"Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah." - Genesis 4:19

"Adah and Zillah, listen to me;
wives of Lamech, hear my words.
I have killed a man for wounding me,
a young man for injuring me."
- Genesis 4:23

Jesus reiterates the design of monogomy in marriage in Matthew (as mentioned by other answerers)

In Genesis, please notice that even though Adam had many ribs available, and even though God could have made an infinite number of wives from just that one rib, he didn't.

God made one woman and gave that woman to one man.

The rest of the scriptures only serve to reinforce God's basic wisdom, in that regard.
