if you mean as the joke.. the chicken who laid back in bed and smoked a cig.

if you believe in christianity, then the chicken, because god made the chicken, and later on the chicken made the egg.

if you go via the path of evolution, and you are talking about our modern-day chicken, then you could follow the theory :

each time a new generation is born, its genetically 0.01% different from the previous generation. so the first chicken was 99.99% different from modern day chicken, it then laid an egg that was 99.98% different from modern day chickens, which grew into a chicken itself and made an egg with only a 99.97% difference.. etc.. eventually, the first modern day chicken, would have started life as an egg, being born from the previous generation of chicken, which is 0.01% different from modern day chicken.

if you are asking about the very very first prehistoric chicken, then you cannot tell, as its possible that the first chicken in existence could have been born inside an egg by a similar bird- creature (which meant the egg would be first), or it could have been birthed live by something slightly more different (thus the chicken came first), it is impossible to tell, thus the reason why the question itself is entirely Philosophical.

then again, you could go with the idea that they are both technically chickens.. whether egg or bird. so the chicken came first no matter what.

.. or you could say that the egg came first.. just that it wasn't a chicken egg.

i would have to say that the chicken came first.
firstly --- because God created animals, and in turn they procreated - thus creating the egg.
