You'll report your 1099-MISC income (and hopefully some expenses against it) on Form 1040 Schedule C or Schedule C-EZ. You'll also report Self Employment tax on most of the profit from this on Form 1040SE-EZ. (Self-employment tax is the same as what Social Security and Medicare deductions are when a person draws wages that are reported on a W-2.)

The W-2 wages go on the front of the Form 1040, and the net income from self-employment will also go on there, but on a different line. (I'll give you more information on that later.)

You'll get an adjustment to income for 1/2 of the SE tax in the Adjustments section of Form 1040.

Then your Self-Employment tax is added on the second page once the income tax amount has been entered.

There are line-by-line instructions in IRS Publication 17 for most of this. You can access that by going to www.irs.gov, then clicking on the Forms and Publications link, then on the Publication number link. Just highlight Publication 17 in the list there, click Review selected publications, and then click the Publication 17 link. It will take a minute to download, but you'll be able to find all of the basics there.

You should be able to find the instruction book on the IRS website.

As far as I know, your contract work should be reported to you in the form of a Form 1099 (or several 1099's, if you contracted for different companies). The 1099 will reflect your income and taxes paid (just as the W-2). You can then calculate from the W-2 and the 1099 what your total income and taxes paid were.

You need a 1040, and a schedule C and a schedule SE. You can download all of them and instructions at irs.gov

You'll put your contract income on the schedule C, along with any associated deductible expenses - you can very possibly use form C-EZ instead of the full schedule C.

After the schedule C is complete, you'll use the schedule SE to calculate self-employment taxes on the contract income. The bottom line numbers from the two schedules will transfer to your 1040.

The W-2 income will just go onto the 1040.
