At work we had to reboot our computers.

I am a trained Microsoft xp technician and I have heard of no such problem today. If this was at work you are looking at an internal or external threat that effect the machines, such as unauthorized access or a virus.

Ensure that the systems are set to automatically install windows updates. This will ensure that the systems are up to speed and safe with the latest security issues.

More likely is that the network was reset or updated.

Sadly we can be of no help unless I find any more information.

I fix desktop computers as a hobby,I fix at least 30 so far, once in awhile,I have this problem and when I change the hard drive, all this problem just got fix.
Your hard drive might be corrupted or it might have a defective sector,or it could have a virus.
I would suggest you try changing the hard drive, but before you do,be sure to save all your important documents in to a cd.
