Because of tradition, government, and religion. Long time ago people with power (the strongest or alpha gorilla) like kings and sheiks would end up with harems of women. They would punish anyone lower or with less power for taking one of their women. As religion took root, it exerted it's power by way of limiting the amount of women one man could take. As neither of these really apply as much today, you could say that the IRS and joint filing operations make up most of the reason that marriage is only a TWO person thing. I think that as long as you are honest and sincere you won't have problems with it, aside from what you create in your mind.

And the reason we're still here is because our ancestors were able to harness the land better and quicker than they could, then drove them out of the best places. Btw, good question... I normally don't have to jump around subject to subject.

Well if you are talking about propagating uniform species like a plant polygamous. That is because plants are hermaphrodities so they reproduce exactly with no outside gene interference. Mammals aren;t hermaphroditic, as a general rule.

If you are talking about polygamous as the practice of polygamy, more then one mating partner I don't see a point at all.

Really I don;t see the point you are trying or exactly what you are asking either way can you clarify a little.

What does polygamy in gorillas have to do with the evolution of the human race? I'm really confused here.

Because polygamous marriages were the first form of marriage in human culture
