The jury is not required to give an explanation of their verdict. I feel sorry that your mate was murdered, but if there was reasonable doubt, then maybe the jury would have found it hard to give a guilty verdict.

Your views about the evidence pointing to his guilt might have been coloured by the fact that the person he murdered was your friend. This is why they sequester jurors and try to select ones that have no connection with the case or prior knowledge of it. Jurors should be impartial.

Then again, this could be yet another miscarriage of justice, as jurors are only human, and humans make mistakes.

The judge can give in effect an explanation during his/her direction. A defendant must be found innocent or at the least acquitted if in the view of the jury the evidence is inconclusive. If they simply don't believe the prosecution then 'not guilty' will be returned.

Think about what you heard in the summing up by the defence and prosecution councils, which was more persuasive to someone who is neutral?

I am so sorry the loss of your mate.
The jury are not required to give reasons for their decisions to help them to remain impartial.
As for the result I can not comment without more information.
I still offer you my sympathy and wish I could do more to help you.
