I paid about $40 for male. I think female is $100+ because of the internal surgery thing. We have two cats, one tabby male and one ginger and white female. Both general moggies, no particular breed. They are both inside cats during the day, all affectionate and cute and sleepy. We let them outside late afternoon/night time. They go hunting and playing around etc. In the morning we find dead mice, rats, sometimes small rabbits (we live on a farming property). Our tabby male cat goes for little snakes and lizards, but we try to discourage that in case one day he gets poisoned and dies. Hope this info helps.

Each vet prices vary, I just paid $130 for my female, check local classifieds sometimes they have cheap desexing days. Moggies are good all round cats, but really the choice is yours, whatever you want, they all have the same instinct - to get those mice, I dont know about the killing of snakes though, maybe if it is acting strange or hiding then check to see if a snake is around.

Not sure on pricing for Australia...US its anwhere between 15 and 100 dollars depending on the vet and availability of subsidies.

Cats ... like people some like to sit on the couch and eat and watch tv...some like to go out prowling. Even a couch potato will tend to keep the mice out of the house due to the smell of the cat and even the laziest cat will harrass a mouse if he is out in the open.

Never heard of controlling snakes with a cat...maybe you need a ferret or a peacock. There was another question on the uk site about how to stop a cat bringing baby snakes into the house.

It cost me $140 to get my female cat desexed, and the male it was only $90. It all depends on the vets in the area. I rang all my local vets to see how much it would be and went with the cheapest (but they were also the most professional)

I called the RSPCA and they desexed all my cats for free. But that was a while ago (In Sydney). However, I am sure that if you contact the RSPCA, they will either fix your cats for free or charge you a minimal fee for having it done.
