falling off an unicycle is most of the time not a big deal because there is nothing much (like a frame) to get tangled up with. so if you loose balance you just jump off and most of the time you end up standing on your feet anyway. Though make sure your shoelaces are tied short enough, because if they tangle up with your pedals, you are in trouble.
Using some wrist protectors will take care of most other cases. Falling backwards is the rarest kind of "involuntary dismount". And if it happens to you, you will automatically use your hands to fall back on. After all, they are free, you don't need them on a handlebar.
Have fun learning to unicycle, I think it is much more fun than a bicycle.

I agree with uncleneal about cycling shorts...but if you want a tailbone protector...Burton makes one (in their "RED" product line). They call them "Impact Shorts". The cool thing about them is they are actually cute! They make one that looks like a "board short" in black, and a lacy red one. Sassy collision insurance-that's the tag line for this product. They are a bit pricey, but so is a doctor visit for a cracked tailbone. $69 at ski/snowboard shops. Check em out!

There are some good tips on this page for learning.

Another method is to get a fall arrest harness and tie it off to something high (over flat ground). if you leave it short enough that that your butt doesn't reach the ground. You will save your coccyx (tail bone). You should still be able to do a reasonable sized circle and figure eight.

Yet another "best answer" for uncle neal. how does he do it?

just try a pair of chamois or cycling shorts under your regular shorts, it will give you some extra padding
