Columbia, SC

Not sure if it was the capital then but my husband is from South Carolina and is proud of the fact that they never actually surrendered or conceded...

Uh, sorry, "i love my mp" but you're incorrect. The city of Columbia surrendered to General Sherman's forces in March 1865. I live in Lexingtong, 16 miles away, and my Sons of Confederate Veterans camp just participated in the annual re-enactment of the Battle of Columbia. A part of this re-enactment is when the current mayor of Columbia portrays the Civil War-era mayor, and surrenders the city to a "Union soldier" in the actual location on the very streetcorner in front of the State House where the surrender took place.

As for the original question, I'm gonna guess and say Austin, Texas.

ADDED COMMENT: Hey, Joel, I think you need to brush up on your American history....Texas seceded from the Union on February 1, 1861. It was the seventh state to do so.

The order of secession was:

South Carolina December 20, 1860
Mississippi January 9, 1861
Florida January 10, 1861
Alabama January 11, 1861
Georgia January 19, 1861
Louisiana January 26, 1861
Texas February 1, 1861
Virginia April 17, 1861
Arkansas May 6, 1861
North Carolina May 20, 1861
Tennessee June 8, 1861
