In China, the ratio of males to females at birth is 1.12. World-wide it is 1.05. Shouldn't it be equal, or is there some biological reason for it? In China, I assume the numbers are skewed due to pre-natal sex screening and abortion of females, but I wonder why North America would have a 1.05 ratio.

There tend to be more males than females even in all-natural births, because Y chromosome sperm (which make males) swim faster than X chromosome sperm (which make females).

the reason there is a 50/50 chance of conceiving a boy or girl is because there are only two. it doesn't nessarily mean that the world should have 50/50. this is a really stupid question. just look at families and you can see how the ratio patterns out.

more males than females die in utero, not sure why - there are more women than men in the world, maybe because 1 man can make a lot more children than 1 woman...
more males ARE conceived than females, but fewer survive to birth.
