"People who call themselves atheists just don't want to think about God, because He might interfere with the way they have chosen to live."
(this was an answer given to a recent question)

what is it you imagine about the way you think I, or most atheists, live that is so incompatible with believing in god? not my atheism itself, but the way I live?

many missed the point here, and stay at home didn't try to respond to it at all.
the question is, what about an athiests way of living do people who think this way imagine is incompatible with belief in a god?

Shaker,
re-read the question, you missed my point. I'm an atheist.

I actually have a bit mor insite into this, because I was told the same thing in a conversation with my dad recently. He is a pastor, and I am agnostic. In a final attempt to possibly believe in the religion I grew up in, I had a 2 hour debate with him.
Christianity teaches that the wages of sin is death. Sin is anything that goes against the teachings within the Bible. They also are taught that it is their goal in life to spread the word about that sin, the consequences of the sin, and the rewards if you keep yourself free from sin. Because of this, it's difficult to be a Christian and not feel that people who are sinning are somehow below you for doing so. They try not to sin because they have adhered to these teachings.
Growing up, I always thought that being a Christian or not was the difference between doing certain things and not doing those things. For example, not drinking, having premarital sex, etc. I felt pretty high and mighty telling people that I didn't do those things. If I ever felt like I "wasn't being a Christian" it was because I was slipping on any number of those items. Like rules on a page.
I quit believing in Christianity and became agnostic before I started doing certain things that are considered sin. I realized that some of those thigns didn't feel wrong... at all. I didn't feel "convicted" like I should have. I spent 2 years trying my best to believe. But, like Lewis Black said, "I would love to have faith. But I have thoughts. And that ruins the whole faith thing." During those 2 years, I read philosophy, the Bible, every bit of information about the world around me, philosophy, thought, religion, etc. I could get my hands on. I revamped my entire belief system. Since I have done that, I am a better person. I used to be more uptight, get angry, fly off the handle. Since I stopped believing Christianity, I am not angry, I don't judge, I NEVER fly off the handle.
During that conversation with my dad, he told me the same thing. YOu are just afraid that you will have to stop doing those things. You don't want to change your lifestyle, so you tell yourself that God is not real. It's simply not the case. But it;s easier for him to believe that we are afraid of not partying than to admit that maybe his religion just doesn't make any blasted sense.

Many Christians believe that if you are not following their rules of abstaining from sex before marriage, going to church, contributing to a church, etc. is the negative part of life that Athiests are trying to get out of by simply denying something that is obviously there - in their opinion, of course. It's the same mentality that has a coworker ask you "what makes you think you are so special that you should get out of doing work".

In a way they are jealous. Jealous of the fact that you get to live on this Earth and indulge in anything that you please with no restrictions what so ever - they figure you must be trying to get away with something and that you will pay for it eventually.

Peace!

it ought to pertain to the incontrovertible fact which you as a guy or woman exist yet below the undertaking call referred to as Atheist, it can not exist using fact there is not any concept. In different words, and in case you may comprehend something it somewhat is complicated, people who have self assurance in some thing have a call using fact to them, the undertaking they suspect in exists whether, atheists have a call concerning non-life. As such, how can non life have some thing that exists, stick to and preserve it, if as they say, it would not exist? in the event that they're protecting and status up for some thing that would not exist, than they do no longer exist the two. yet like I stated, you as a guy or woman do exist.

Well, by being myself without some god to follow, I feel I have to rely on something more. Myself. That is incompatible with god apparently, because god apparently wants you to live for him. I refuse to live my life for another thing I have never even seen or actively exchanged sentences with.
In this way, I have made myself a good human being, not placing good with a faith you must commit to, nor a lifestyle you must change, I am just a good human being because I CHOOSE. If you are good because of your god, so be it. But I am an example that there is good without believing in something higher to pay me later.

This is the extent to which some people:
1) want to control the lives of others.
2) believe other people think differently than they do.
3) prove themselves wrong when they should shut up.
4) lie to proclaim themselves morally superior.
5) relate to others by proclamation.

To be clear, this is not multiple choice. I stopped here, since I was two or three away from commenting on how far in such people's heads are.

I put my Napster and its thousands of downloads on random and the first song to play at the moment I saw your question was "My Sweet Lord". An incredible song, although this was a tribute to the Hindu and Buddhist gods, of course. What a fine and funny coincidence!

You see, atheists are non-believers, AnswerFaerie. This means that they do not believe. Since they do not believe, God does not believe in them. Since we base our lives on imaginary figureheads who love only us (oh, and the child molesters if they repent up in heaven), we have no belief left for you people. Thus, you cease to exist.

Gosh Answer, why pay this any mind at all...? Whoever gave this answer thought he had the ability to use a crystal ball and see into everything with absolute accuracy - obviously he was incorrect and flawed in his thinking.

Perhaps he was just trying to prove that the 'a$$' portion assumption was himself when he put his ridiculously notion into his own god's mouth.

Keep in mind that in general Christians and other god-believers feel it's their right to put whatever words they like into the mouths of their gods - even if they know that what they're saying stinks of BS.

A fellow Atheist.

Fill in the word "agnostic" for atheist and you will have the actual correct quotation. Agnostics just don't want to decide, and haven't taken the time to think and conclude. I think that is what that responder was thinking of.

Someone who is an atheist has thoughtfully considered their viewpoint and live according to that belief, just like everyone who has decided upon a belief system. If you are an atheist, you would live according to personal preference, which may or may not be very similar to the way most Theists would live given the set of beliefs that they choose to live by. Hope that helps.

Hypothesis:

Most people live day-to-day in perfectly normal ways, working, eating etc. However, some people are SO religious everything they do is about Jesus, meaning if they stopped believing, that would change EVERYTHING.

In other words the person who wrote that was a cultist.

That is my hypothesis.

I'm agnostic, I am no longer Christian:

- I sponser a child in Ethiopia, and give hundreds a year to charity
- I treat others kindly (with the exception of some anonymous ranting online)
- I am faithful to my wife
- I don't lie, cheat, steal
- I love my wife and son

This is more than most Christians can say for themselves...so I'm with you. The only interference religion would play in my life is to hide the responsibility I face for my own life, hide true causes of events, and offer me "God did it."

Stayathomem0m: You've cleary missed my point. My point isn't that Christians do it (although I know the majority don't), my point is that being an athiest or agnostic isn't a method of avoiding doing the things God would want.

I'm sorry for daring to answer a question, and risk saying something you wouldn't like. Hope Saudi Arabia is good to you.
