Addiction to drugs and alcohol is a disease; it has been recognized as a disease by the American Medical Association for over four decades. It has a pattern of symptoms which are similar across all types of substance abuse:

It is a chronic condition; it doesn’t go away.

It is progressive; addiction only gets worse with continued use.

Persons with this disease often relapse.

Left untreated, this disease will frequently result in death.

It is treatable; while alcoholism and drug addiction are terminal illnesses, the progression of the disease can be arrested at almost any stage.

The disease of alcoholism / drug addiction affects roughly ten percent of the population. But this disease affects not only the person with the addiction but also everyone around them—family members, employers & co-workers, friends and the community in general. Addiction takes a tremendous toll on society. Economic costs of substance abuse – to the medical system, justice system, and employers – are estimated at nearly two billion annually in t he United States. Drinking or drug use is involved in half of all motor vehicle deaths and boating fatalities and in at least one-third of all suicides. Over fifty percent of all violent crimes (murder, rape, assault, child abuse) involve the use of alcohol and/or drugs. The Alcohol & Drug Council exists to address the problems created by alcoholism and drug addiction in a proactive way.

The Disease theory of alcoholism states that alcoholism is a disease process. The disease theory is generally accepted by the medical community. Outside the medical community, there is considerable debate over whether or not alcoholism should be considered a disease. Proponents argue that genetic, neurological and behavioral studies distinguish those with alcohol dependence from problem drinkers. Opponents cite the inability to pin down the behavioral issues to a physical cause as a reason for avoiding classification.
