Stretch your legs really well.
Keep your feet shoulder width apart with your toes pointing forward (or whichever way is most natural, but try for as straight forward as possible).
Place the bar above your shoulder blades and at the bottom of the back of your neck. (you'll find a comfortable spot)
Keep your back straight.
Look forward, never up.
When you do your squat, go down till your quad is parallel to the floor (like your sitting on a imaginary chair) and then explode up, but stay under control. If you don't go all the way down you'll be wasting your time.
DON"T FORGET TO BREATH!! Inhale as you go down and exhale as you go up.
If you do a heavier weight with less reps you'll build muscle and strength.
If you do less weight and more reps you'll tone up and also build strength.
If your still uncertain, just ask someone at the gym who looks like they know what they are doing.
Other than that, good luck and don't die.

It's almost easier to do reverse lunges, this way you won't have to worry about your knees going over your toes.

Stand by a chair. Hold onto it (the back of it) your leg closest to the chair will stay there. Your other leg is going to go back, your foot on it's toes and the knee bent. The leg closest to the chair is bent at the knee and you are going down until your other knee is almost touching the floor.

You can go to your search engine and type in "reverse lunges" and you can find some pics and demos.

if your talking about weight lifting squat well, first put the bar on your shoulders and grasp the bar to what feels comfortable to you. Next, bend down with your back straight and your head up for good movement and proper lift. On your way down inhale and way up exhale. Hope this works for you.
