We have a Yor-chi, he was 9 weeks when we got him. He is the sweetest pup you would ever see. He is now 4 1/2 years old. Now all of a sudden he is targeting my daughter for severe aggression. He attacks for no reason that I can see. He has also attacked my mother and I.

He seems to zone out, his eyes glaze over like he does not even recognize us. Then when he snaps out of it he acts like he does not know why we are upset with him. He does not remember what he did.

Please help us with this problem.

We have a long haired female chi (3 1/2 years old) that is his mate. She seems to know when this is going to happen and hides.

Some people said we need to have him put down before he hurts someone. He has broken skin before MINE ha ha, but we love him and he is so sweet most of the time.

Don't know what to do!!!

You have 3 options.
1. Go to a certfied dog behaviorist
2. Euthanize him before he seriously hurts someone
3. Ignore the problem.

I suggest #1. I also suggest bringing him to your vet for a complete check up...Complete bloodwork (including a T4 panel) and urinalysis. Sometimes if a dog is hypothyroid that can show itself by unprovoked aggression, and once treated the aggression goes away.

Try this...roll him on his back, hold him down and tower over him (not so close that he can bite you but close enough he has to focus on you) and stare hard and intensely, directly into his eyes. DO NOT break the stare once you start this! You can blink but never let up the intensity of your stare.

If he keeps looking at you and never turns away, you need to put the dog down. This is a submission move, one to let him know who is dominate, alpha of the group. Him not breaking the gaze shows he will never be dominate and will continue to be aggressive with ever intensity as he grows older.

If he does submit, then there is something mentally wrong with the dog, possible very mild epilepsy that causes confusion and dementia which would scare the dog and cause him to become aggressive.

Honestly, keeping a dog no matter how small around that attacks a child is really bad on the parents part.

Take him to a vet to get checked out. He may have an underlining health problem. That your dog would go from being a nice dog, to a biting dog after 4 1/2 years is not normal. My mother knew people before I was born, whose dog did this. They took him to the vet and he had a brain tumor which was causing all sorts of problems including agression.

I'm not the kind of person who says "never put a dog down." I did not believe in euthanizing a dog until I saw the video "Shelter Dogs." Some dogs really are biters.

You're lucky the dog is so small because then the attack won't be fatal.... but it sounds like the dog will most definitely attack again.

See a dog specialist and get professional temperament testing done.
