We have been brainwashed over generations to believe pot is the same as heroin and alcohol doesn't cause voilence.
I think people think you smoke weed, you get violent, and you commit mad atrocious crimes.
I say ban ciggies and legalize it!!!
ALSO, that woman dying...if she wanted crack to make it better I say give it to her...SHE'S DYING!!!! DOES SHE HAVE TO SUFFER TOO????

I think that it has a lot to do with the negative perception of marijuana. It's mostly thought of as an illegal drug used by teens and adults to get high. It would be like legalizing cocaine for narcolepsy or something.
However, I do agree that it could provide a very safe and potent treatment for those with cancer (to help with severe stomach pain) and glaucoma, as well as a variety of other illnesses.
But to answer your question, I just believe it's the negative perception that most have of marijuana. I used to smoke it all the time - I even went to Amsterdam with a friend of mine a few years ago and boy, do they have the variety there. Hundreds of different strains, sativas, indicas, all kinds of hybrids. If I were sick and could use marijuana, I would probably grow my own plant (which is very easy but time consuming - cannabis is a weed so it grows very readily). Even our founding father, George Washington would grow marijuana. I think he even patented a rolling machine...
But for me, recreational marijuana use is in my past. Sure it can be relaxing and it's not all that bad for your health. However, I have learned that its most harmful effect is that it is a drug that leads to an unproductive lifestyle. I just hate the laziness, the feeling like I cannot do anything productive for hours afterward. And it has the tendency to make some feel depressed (it blocks off the supply of seratonin, a hormone in your blood that makes you feel the sensation of happiness). Is marijuana more harmful then alcohol, probably, but not by much, and I don't think it should be legalized because of the reasons I stated above.

I guess that drug testing is such a big issue. Smoking anything, baccy, weed, is so bad for your lungs , well that is why they are hesitant to legalise it.
