Underestimating the enemy.
Overestimating their own strengths.

Lisa b - That's a good one about the salute, what's the punch line?

Vietnam was a conflict, not a war, therefore it can't even be classified with the Korean war and WWI and WWII. After Vietnam there was the conflict in the Gulf ( Iraq back in '90) which by the way ended very soon after it began, and now Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) Soldiers are still there, and by far not loosing the "war", Speaking as someone who's got relatives and friends there the Media doesn't report a lot of things that go on, either the good things that Americans and coalition Soldiers do there, or the BAD things that the AIF (Iraqi Army) does there, like being two faced and soldier by day, sniper by night. Stealing from their own people, killing and raping their own people, yeah there are some good ones, but there are some bad ones too. So before you do some more bashing read a history book or two, even watch the history channel. By the way did you know the reason why the American Salute shows the back of the hand and not the palm like every other countries salute does? It's because the Americans have NEVER lost a war!

It appears that the majority of the answers to this question are from complete idiots who are the ones that are REALLY in need of a reality check! The fact is that America generally can't realise that they are NOT the world police, and that they shouldn't keep sticking thier noses into things that don't concern them!
Korea, Vietnam, various South American disasters, Afghanistan, Somalia, Iraq - all fiascos that got the country major whoopass, and for what? Don't give me the "democracy" or "WMD" b ulls hit stories! You are only trying to justify your own tainted version of what the FACTS show actually happened.

Until the government learns to mind its own damn business and stop interfering in other countries affairs you will be losing a few more.

This one is too easy! The U.S. has not declared war since WWII. All "wars" since then have been police actions. They are run by politicians without the support of the people.
Politicians should NEVER be allowed to run a war. That is a job for professional soldiers.
Politicians can't decide on ANYTHING and in war you have to play to WIN.
You have to move FAST.
You have to keep SECRETS.
You have to kill enemies and destroy their ability to fight.
You keep hammering them until THEY SUE FOR PEACE.
YOU don't try to be diplomatic. That is bad joke on your army.
YOU make THEM SURRENDER.

We didn't lose the American Revolution, War of 1812, Civil War, Mexican-American, Spanish-American, World War I, and World War II. The Korean War was a tie. We just haven't had much luck since then.

Just get a certain segment of the government combined with the media to under mine every effort made by the Adminstation in power to win it. Also fight it as a "limited war".

People like you who can't let us do our Job and think we should leave the war so that years to come you can rub it in our face that we lost it even though we did more than people ever thought we did.
