Everyone has already answered this question more or less.... but I would like to point out that I know people who have volunteered to go to Iraq and were not sent... they weren't bad Airmen or anything, just for some reason they woundn't be selected to go. They did however, select a bunch of people who didn't volunteer, which to me makes no sense. If someone wants to go, let them, I say... Also know of people who were selected to go (non-volunteers) and were able to swap out with people who wanted to go... not always the case though... military is funny that way.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is that you are not guaranteed to go to Iraq, even if you volunteer. I know I only speak for one service, but I work in a joint service command (Army, Nacy, Air Force, Marines) and I have seen those same principles applied across the board...

No. Basic Training and then AIT. Afterwards, you will probably sent to your Unit unless you have an additional school in your contract (Airborne, AirAssult, etc.)

If the unit is deployed, more than likely you will be sent to the Rear detachment company and be held back until the unit returns or sent over if needed. It is doubtful you will be thrust into a patrol immediately. It would behoove the PLT SGT and PLT LDR to get you up to speed before they felt you were ready.

You go to basic training or boot camp. If you have a specialty you go to tech school or if you are not in a specialty you go to your next duty station and get On the Job Training. If that next duty station is Iraq, then that is where you will get it.

No way, you would be more of a liability than an asset if they were to do that.

You would need to learn equipment usage, chain of command, job responsibilities, all the lingo, etc. Training is there for a reason.
