It's most likely a defense mechanism you are using to avoid expressing your true emotions. I'm surprised a therapist has not confronted you on this. Good for you though for being insightful enough to realize this isn't normal or healthy. Try asking a therapist why he/she thinks you do this. He/she will probably be able to give you some good insight into this. Best of luck!!

It happens to me a lot. It's not really laughing at the sad thing. You are just trying so hard not to laugh, so it's giving you this weird laughing mood, and you end up laughing at the way you were trying not to laugh. But if you try to do the opposite, it won't happen anymore. All you have to do is feel comfortable when you laugh and don't try to stop it at all, and that way you won't even feel like laughing anymore. But you have to truly not care so much about laughing. Once you care, your mind will make you feel as if it's a game, and that will make you laugh even more.

ever heard of nervous laughter? sometimes if i have something embarrassing or taboo to talk about with even the closest of friends i will get a big cheesy grin and giggle like a school girl. i don't know how to stop it, other than somehow make yourself more comfortable with the topic that causes this behavior.

why don't you ask your therapist? thats what hes there for. as for stopping laughing , put yourself in a life or death situation. if that don't wake you up, then there's no problem.

It's simply your body's way of dealing with it. I don't see the harm, do you? If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
