Actually there are some people who believe that the Mona Lisa is a merging of Leonardo's face with that of a woman's. They once took X-rays of the painting to discover a sketch underneath it, that looks very different from the final image. The picture is the best example of a technique that doesn't give smooth edges and looks like there is a haze that covers the whole painting, the word escapes me at the moment, I know it's Italian. The background of the painting isn't a real perspective the lines are skewed, and make a 'V'.

The Mona Lisa is so famous because it is so intriguing. Mona Lisa is said to be a 24 yr old woman named Lisa Gherardini del Giocondo which was the wife of a prominent merchant in that time. She is being portrayed in the painting without having any jewelry (which is remarkable for that time and her social status) and low neckline that reveals a little bit of cleavage. Also, during that time shaved hairlines (to make the forehead look longer) and plucked eyebrows adds to her unsettling appearance. Her direct stare that goes right out to the audience doesn't fit with her almost "gentle" smile combined with the high horizon line in the painting give it an almost unsettling but intriguing aspect to it. Hope this helped to clarify a few things!

Well, one theory is that Da Vinci, who painted the work, deliberately left her expression ambiguous. He blurred the edges of her mouth and the corners of her eyes so that her expression isn't very clear. So it looks like she's smiling one moment; the other moment it seems to change, just like a real person.

It's one theory of many. Makes sense to me.

God bless.

because of the her eyes, they are focused like in a photograph which is very very very difficult to paint. plus her smile captivates people, its difficult to tell what mood the subject is in. i along with several others believe that the secret to the smile is the corners of her mouth are just barely opened, which was popular during that time period.
