About 2 pounds per week. Many people will lose more than that the first couple of weeks, if they are exercising and cutting down on food, but then it evens out.
For your age, it is important not to lose toow quickly, so that you don't stop growin (at 16, you might already be at your full height, but maybe not).
It is better to concentrate on what you eat, not how many calories. Cut out ALL sugared drinks (colas, sodas, sports drinks, etc.) Many teens consume up to 1000 extra calories a day just in that form.
Eat as many fruits and vegetables as you want---don't limit yourself. Eat enough protein each day, especially lean meats (chicken, fish). At least one palm-sized serving of meat per day is generally suffiecient. Limit the number of servings of carbohydrates, especially processed ones like white bread, white flour, white rice. Try to eat carbs that are whole wheat---you get more nutrition, and more fiber from them.
Drink 8-10 glass of water per day.
Excercise about 30 minutes per day---a brisk walk is fine, you don't need to run or go to a gym. Work yourself up gradually to 40-45 minutes if you can.
If you do all those things, you WILL lose weight. The reason people don't lose weight is because they might do all the right things for only a week or something, then go back to the bad habits.

Healthy weight loss = 2 lbs a week so roughly 8 lbs a month, 40 lbs in 5 months. I think you are few who have a realistic goal.

Most suggest decreasing your calorie intake by 500. Depending on what you are eating, this wouldnt be hard (cut out the pop and un-used calories during snacks you are eating just because). Eat healthy, well-balanced when you are hungry, and only until you are satisfied. (Dont skip meals, especially not breakfast, if you arent hungry, eat something small, but eat something). Make sure to get plenty of water.

Most suggest 30 minutes of exercise a day. Depending on what you do, this is a good rule to live by. Remember the key - you have to burn more calories than you consume.

Good luck on your goal.

It would be safe to lose 40 to 45 lbs in a five month time frame - that breaks down to roughly 2 lbs per week which is the healthiest way to lose it and keep it off.

Calorie consummation for weight lose at your size would be roughly 1600 calories per day and 20 minutes a day 6 days of week of exercise (anything you like doing) should be enough to get the weight off before school starts

Under no circumstance is it healthy to lose more than 3-5 lbs per week. If you are losing weight faster than that, you could be in trouble.

You didn't gain the weight overnight, and can't successfully lose it fast either.

As always, see a doctor before you go on the weight loss plan, to make sure that your health will not be in jeopardy from the diet and for some sound advice.

Don't worry, you'll get it, probably around 1500-2000 calories a day with exercise, eat healthy foods though, I'm a skinny boy and don't have a weight problem at all and I run everyday around 35-40 minutes and it really makes you in good shape, but I eat whatever I want though and I could probably skip the running and I would still be very skinny, but I run because I enjoy it and like doing it. and im 16 too.

yes that pretty safe substitute fruits for snacks instead of other things and watch snack foods and cereals with hydrogenated oils with produce trans fat which is a bit*ch to burn. Eat really lean meats and get as much protein as possible with staying in 1200 calories a day since you are a female snack with fruits through out the day when your hungry its all about your metabolism it really helps go to the gym do some cardio and a little weights to get a leaner look good look

I've lost 5 kilos in my first week. It's my 10th day and I have included salad with some protein (eg. egg/ lean chicken) as you suggested. After 4 years of trying, the fat is finally coming off. It truly feels like magic!

Get started today!

That's very reasonable. I'd eat around 1700 calories, run 2-3 miles 3 times a week, and cut out soda and trans fats.

its safe. exercise by walking where you want to go and getting out more. shopping get you alot of exercise shopping as long as you dont stop at every other food booth! the treadmill, riding bikes, doing certain aerobics to trigger certain spots and swimming are key. Cutting out eating lots of yeast products, starches, sugars and fats, and eating more proteins, good fats such as fish oil, peanut butter blah blah, fruits and veggies will help u too
