My only answer as to why the Marines get the toughest jobs is because the average Leatherneck is a much better fighter. He has far more guts, courage, and better officers... These boys out here have a pride in the Marine Corps and will fight to the end no matter what the cost.

I know how you feel, I had a hard time choosing between the two. Most people told me the Marines were better, even some of my cousins in the National Guard, but I decided to ask the Army recruiters, one of whom was a Marine before transferring. Their main reasons for choosing the Army over the USMC were:

1.) Money (I wanted to join since after Sept. 11, so you know how that made me feel)

2.) Open Contract; they told me it meant they would give me whatever job they felt like. The truth is all branches open contract; it basically means that if you don't meet the requirements or the job is closed, they won't give it to you. At least the Marines told me BEFORE I signed.

3.) Large organization vs. small organization. They told me things like Marines go to Fort Benning for Airborne training. First off, Army soldiers fly on Air Force jets because of their size. Second of all, being in a smaller branch has its advantages. There are 170,000 Marines in a 1.8 million member branch, and for good reasons. Also, each Marine is given more individual training and can be expected to do more and be more reliable. Many smaller corporations are actually much more efficient than the larger ones.

Most guys I know who joined the Army, including the recruiter I mentioned, joined for economic reasons, although some guys joined for special forces and Ranger training, but Marines have MEUs, which are special operations capable.

As one Marine told me, the reason that they offer so much money is because that's all the Army has over the Marines. If you're dedicated and you want to be in the military, the Marines are perfect for you.

I was scared that I wasn't physically ready, which is one reason I considered the Army, but the Marines and my father (who was deadset against it before I signed up) have helped me a lot and now all I need to do is cut my runtime by 30 seconds and I can leave on April 9. That's the most important thing about the Marines; if you show them you really want to become one of them, they will try to help you every chance they get.

I hope you make the right decision, and I wish you and everyone else who stands up for what's right the best.

i think what would happen is that all the branches would come together and help eachother out while calling eachother p*ssies and talking sh*t to eachother because each branch has it specialty and we all say we are better than the next but when it comes down to it we all have eachothers backs and we would do what we have to do to make it work. and for those of you who think that the Marines would go in and wipe everything and everybody out are f*cking stupid or just living an fantasy because the Marines need the Navy for things so that right there would put them at a disadvantage where as the Army is totally self sufficient.. id like to see some average Marine go and wipe out the Rangers or SF or Delta good luck with that. and all that "the Marines are the first ones in" is total BS look up some facts before you say it because it has been army SF and Delta in the last couple conflicts first.

Let put all the Marine bullshit to real facts. The Marines can be disband. Army SPECIAL FORCES or AIR FORCE mostly go into wars first Marines can not fight a major war alone.Army fought England to get our Independence.he ARMY fought civil war loosing 600,000 men the Army north and south to keep AMERICA Together as well as stop slavery. The ARMY is the boss over the MARINES in a war. The ARMY is AMERICAS main fighting force. The ARMYS Air force won ww2. The MARINES are good but no ARMY no AMERICA

The Marines fought so fiercely, they were given the name Devil Dogs by the Germans. The Army was never called Devil Dogs. This is a quote from a historian at The National Museum of the Marines Corps.

"The National Museum of the Marine Corps refers to the origin of the term “Devil Dogs” as tradition, which is not the same as truth, said Patrick Mooney, visitor services chief at the museum. “We have no proof that it came from German troops though tradition says it came from German troops referring to Marines,” he said. “There is no written document in German that says that the Marines are Devil Dogs or any correct spelling or language component of ‘Devil Dog’ in German.”"

It was verified by the German army’s Military History Research Institute. "“I never heard anyone using the word ‘Teufelshund’ or ‘Teufelshunde’ in Germany,” said institute spokesman Lt. Col. Heiner Bröckermann in an e-mail. “Using Google in Germany I found to my surprise that ‘Teufelshund’ (in the mention of the devils pet) is used today by German witchcraft gamers and role players, but I think this is a rather new wording of the computer gamers and role player communities.”

The Marines are fierce fighters. Over 90% of their NCOs were killed in the assault on the castle Chapultepec in Mexico in 1847 earning the fabled "blood stripe" on their dress blues. According to the National Museum of Marine history, '“While a wonderful story, and one that is taught to incoming recruits, it is only a story,” Beth L. Crumley, of the Marine History Division, said in an e-mail.' "Moreover, seven Marines were killed at Chapultepec out of a force of between 400 and 450 Marines."

The Marines are a service of legends. They have nothing but integrity and honor. What is the difference between the Army and Marines. One service just tells the truth and lives with it. The other service has a lot of advertisement. Read the source articles and you decide.

What do Marines think of soldiers? Heh... Well, when a soldier can be dumb enough to try to open a door (and we're talking a locked door and still trying to open it) when it says "SHIFT WORKERS- QUIET PLEASE- DO NOT DISTURB" on multiple signs on the door to sleeping quarters, I don't think a Marine is going to say very good things about them.

If you're looking to go straight to war, you can join either. My husband is a Marine and is over there for a year. His brother is in the Army and has done a year in Iraq, a year in Afganistan and is about to go back to Iraq again. Neither are too safe. If you want to be safe, go Navy. If you want to go wussy, go Air Force.

true that the Marines have a MUCH more strenuous boot camp and the hardest to complete, thats where the saying "The Few, The Proud" comes from. what you get out of it lasts a lifetime. along with friendships and brotherhoods. always faithful...Semper Fi....as far as comparing the two...all branches are here for the same reason. To Defend !

Marine Corps Basic Training is longer, and more tough to accomplish. When you graduate, you can proudly claim the title of Marine. Army Boot Camp is a cake walk compared to it. "If the Army or the Navy ever gaze on Heaven's scenes, they will find the streets are guarded by United States Marines."

When I was in the Army we called Marines bullet stoppers. They are generally the first ones into the fight.
