My mother was not from the cook side of her family and boiled most everything she made, maybe that is why this cake always tasted good to me she boiled the first part before she added the flour to bake.
I know it didn't have milk or eggs and that it had sugar raisans, nuts we collected from the walnut tree, oil, flour.
Now that I am in my 40's I have been hungry for it Qould anyone have the recipe or even heard of it?

I would think boiling a cup of raisans into this recipe would plump them up and the walnuts should be mixed in just before you pour it into the pan.

Poor Man's Cake
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup water
1/3 cup vegetable oil or shortening
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Combine the sugar, water, oil and spices in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Set aside to cool.
Sift the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt together. Add this to the cooled sugar-water mixture. Mix well. Pour into a square cake pan and bake for 35 minutes.
