It wouldn't surprise me if they sat back though and watched the Western and Middle Eastern nations destroy themselves. Russia would just love to sell its weapons to the Middle East and sell its 'secure' oil and gas reseves to the West.

The side with the USA. Look if a WW3 would to happen England, USA, Russia, France, Germany, Japan and others will be together on this. Most countries that have a democracy will pact together. And plus your Question is a bit vague. So we don't know how counties will react.

The USA is the only country that can begin this war. Europe won't keep friendly relations with the USA forever. So Russia will stay out of war or with the Europe.

That's hard to say, these days. The US has taken in many of their refugees, but many of their old, communist scientists have developed weapons for the mid-East.
