When holidaying in Bangkok, I visited a market. At around sunset, music came over the loudspeaker and everyone around me (ie the local Thais), stopped walking and just stood still. About 30secs later the music stopped and everyone continued about their business. What was this music? Was this the Thai national anthem? Does everyone have to stand still or just the Thais (what about the tourists)? How often does this occur? Everyday? 3 times a day?

it could be the national anthem. Also music is coming from a small truck with loudspeakers and signs for ads, info people of a festival, and also to promote boxing matches.

it probably was the national anthem. It always plays at 8:00 in the morning before the school and government office hours start and again at 6:00 p.m. in the evening. Also, if you go see a movie in a theater, they will play the King royal tribute music before the movie start too. Everybody will stand up just like the national anthem to show the respect. I suggest you do what the Romans do when you're in Rome. That is to also stand still till the song ends to show respect.

It should be National Anthem, which will be radio twice a day at 8:00 am (school and government office open time) and at 6:00 pm. in the evening. They just do like all other nationalties do, nothing special.

The other music you may hear is, Royal Anthem.. The song will be played when Their majesties arrive and depart at all official functions. All entertainment, shows and threatres also play the song prior to the show.

It's definitely the national anthem. Thais are very patriarchal!

it is very odd to see yourself walking alone while others are standing still. in the theatre some staff will ask you to stand up if they see you sitting while others are paying their respect to their King. will it be a national anthem or the king's anthem... you can't help but to do just the same.

I agree with PO@BWC. If all around you are standing and showing respect, you should do it too.
