Depends on the situation.

At 5 he should know what he is allowed to have and not allowed to have. You should be able to put a bottle of wine in the fridge and not have him drink it. He is no longer a baby. You said you put it in the back of the fridge so it seems that you did try and keep it out of his direct view.

Is he allowed to go in the fridge alone? If not, then I would punish him.

Does he know that he isn't allowed to drink grown up drinks and he did it anyway? If yes, then a punishment is needed.

Is he allowed to pour his own drinks? Is he allowed to drink out of the bottles? If not and he did then he needs to be punished.

Did he lie about drinking it? If so, then he needs to be punished.

He needs to learn that as he gets older he has to be more responsable. You are now trusting him with toys with smaller parts and maybe be in the bath unsupervised for longer time spans. These are privledges that he has to earn. If he finds a bottle that isn't his on the school bus next year and opens it up and drinks it he could get very, very sick.

If there aren't clear rules in the kitchen I would set some tonight. Go over them and stick by it. Show him what he can have and cannot have on his own. We have a rule in my home that he must ask to get something to eat or drink. He is 4 and it is jsut better that way.

Take Care. SD

Not at all. Well, we (my wife and I) are entirely against spanking, so I don't ever think there is a legitimate reason for spanking. We have 3 kids ( 5, 7 and 10) and have never spanked any of them.

A 5 years old should not be left unsupervised in the kitchen. Kids like to explore things. And that is important for the development of a inquisitive mind. He should not be punished for being inquisitive. That is why he cannot be left alone in the kitchen!

Make sure to put dangerous things out of his reach. And always supervise your kid!

Sorry, but why would you spank your 5 year old for that!? I do spank at times but a five year old don't realize what alcohol is. If you don't want him to get into it then don't have it in the fridge.

you should watch your fridge contents....but i'm not as mean as other people. at age five, your child should not be allowed to be unsupervised in the kitchen...little explorers can get into trouble.
also, i dont think you should spank kids...but i come from a family that does, and at a young age, immediate repurcussions are needed. if you spank him/her anymore than a minute after being caught/commiting the act he/she wont know what the punishment is for and will think you are mean. a lesson wont be learned.

Well in this case it would be a definite warning and you should not keep open liqueur in the fridge if you allow him/her to go into the fridge unsupervised.Kids are curious and need supervision as to what they are able to get into -this was clearly at his/her reach and you weren't around when it happened so no i wouldn't spank i would change some things to prevent this from occurring again.

Children are curious so he probably just wondered what it was. Don't spank him, just try to explain to him that its mummys drink and he mustn't drink it again. However you shouldn't leave things which he shouldn't have within his reach. It is dangerous! Imagine if he drank the whole bottle he could have got very ill. Make sure all alcohol and chemicals are out of childrens reach in future.

Well if you want to spank yourself go right ahead...YOU were the one who had an open bottle of wine in the refridgerator where a 5 year old could get to it. SUPPOSEDLY you are the "responsible" ADULT...or would that job be the job of the 5 year old?

omg.... No you should slap yourself for being an idiot. Does he know it is not good for him? Have you been teaching him not to take stuff from fridge?
Save the spanking for the real issues, like setting the cat on fire, punching his sister, the things he obviously knows better for. And put the harmfull things out of reach for him....

I wouldnt spank the child, I would have your husband spank you for leaving wine where a child could get at it.Do you realise thst a child could get drunk too and end up in the hospital with alcohol ingestion problems? be smart and keep your booze locked up! and your child out of the kitchen. rubberstampr

Your 5 year old probably doesn't know that he/she shouldn't be drinking the wine. Simply tell him/her that this is a special grown up drink. And buy him/her boxes of juice every time you buy alcohol & say, just like these are your special drink!! That way, your child feels he/she is getting something special; too!!
