How could Harry Potter survive Lord Voldemort's attack with only a small scar?

Ask J K Rowling, she wrote the novels. From memory, gods and religion are not mentioned at all in the Harry Potter books. We do not know if even the Dursleys go to church. It matters not at all. The British are not obsessed with religion as many Americans are so you would hardly expect it to be mentioned.

I'm a little worried I think I know the answer to this one.
Wasn't it a sacrificial act by his mother?
Dumbledore explains at some point that when Harry's mother died for him, it acted as a protective charm that saved him.

(I don't even like Harry Potter. There's much better fantasy writing out there)

Well, if he was a child during the attack, it would seem that that particular wound would have been much larger on the baby's face, in relation to the size it is today as an adult...not to mention that scars tend to get smaller with the passage of time...

Was this supposed to be difficult?
