Do they smile because they are happy or is it just because
there lips get stuck on there teeth and it just happens to make
it look like there smiling.

sometimes after my dog "smiles"
she licks her nose or just like licks with
her tongue and then she stops smiling
thats why i think its because her lip got
unstuck so she wasn't smiling because
she was happy.

I do wish people who have Shih Tzu would learn to spell it..Anyway Shih Tzu are the most loving dog you will ever run across. They are always smiling for they are the happiest dogs. What got me in to raising Shih Tzu was that I save one from a breeder farm, she could no longer produce puppies so they were going to kill her. When I heard about that I beg for the dog. She was so used up , she had sores all over her, and half of a tongue. I took her and got her spayed and medical treatment.. She only live with me for two years before her little heart gave out. But in those two years I never seen such a happy dog. What she went through no dog should have went through but she still loved people. Because Of of my little Duzzy i started breeding Shih Tzu's. Smiling they are always smiling.

When dogs smile naturally, without having been taught to do it as a trick it is usually referred to as a submissive smile. A very frightened dog will do it, it looks really cute but they are basically telling you that they are terrified.
Having said that, I have never seen a shih-tzu do it. They usually seem to have more than their share of courage. I'd have to guess that it's because her teeth are dry and her lip got stuck. Take a look the next time she does it.
