no defiantly not you need something to support the centre panel of brickwork the only way you dont is if you remove all the centre panel tlll you reach the chimney stack and remove the stack if Otis a terraced house you will then interfere with next doors flues
The advise given by "BOB THE BUILDER" is completely wrong
and I would question his work if he thinks that his way is ok

Yes but you have to put a lintel or rsj between the two walls to support the chimney above. Do be careful with this sort of thing as it can easily come down
