my mums got a windows xp instalation sp1 and key which updated fine to service pack 2,until now
i refomatted loaded bk the windows .when i got to update it says enter a vaild cd ,,,ive tryed three different cds that are service pack 1,,,,and all say the same thing....i got hold of a windows instalation sp2 but my key does not work with it

ive heard that windows have stopped updating from servive pack 1 from early lastyear ..dont know how true this is .. and that could be the problem
if so will i have to buy a new copy of windows,or can i buy the sp2 cd from microsoft and continue updating from there please help sp1 is bugging me ........many thanks people

You should reinstall windows from the CD associated with your valid windows key. This is the only version your CD key will work with. If this key is not working, you can call Microsoft and they will help you.

Afterward all that key trouble is clearded up, you can use windows update to reinstall service pack 2. (SP2 updates best from a new/clean install) They have not stopped support for any XP updates.

install windows with sp1 with the product key that's valid for sp1 after windows is installed and up and running and before you do anything else install sp2, windows shouldn't ask for a product key on a system with windows already installed

i thought Microsoft was only updating if you already had their windows p with service pack 2 built in any older ones are no longer updateable

if you go to www.softwarepatch.com you can download a copy of sp2 which you can then burn to disc and then you will always have it on disc, thats what i have done
