Pascal's wager, while an interesting thing to consider, is generally considered a poor argument from a Christian standpoint, and pretty much every other standpoint. While it makes a true mathematical suggestion, it fails to use good purpose when making a decision. The whole "Better to be safe than sorry" isn't what Christianity is about. You either jump all the way in, or stay out. You can't just dabble for fire insurance.

As a Christian, people's use of this principle in evangelism is usually a sign that they are running out of things to say, or that they don't trust God to provide answers, or they don't have answers because they never study their Scriptures.

Anyway, Happy St. Patty's day, make sure to get some of that green beer!

(gulp) ahh. Thanks!

Yeah, christians would be awfully busy if they applied Pascal's wager to all gods -- there have been literally hundreds of thousands of them throughout history. And they think theirs is "the only one" simply because 20% or so of the world is currently deluded into believing in it! Ha! It is to laugh...

Peace.

It operates on a couple of faulty assumptions, that a) a person can simply decide to believe or not, as though it were a light switch and b) that there is nothing of value to be lost in following the Christian faith. Those of us who have left it, beg to differ.

If you read his Night of Fire, you will see Pascal is talking about Jesus.

It's not as much fun as having another Buddhist who misinterprets "perception" and "karma" leveling threats at ya for wondering if a person's really a qualified lama or not.
